Something I don't understand

Hezbollah militants/terrorists/freedom fighters/Islamofascists/whatever kill three Israeli Soldiers and kidnap two others.

That's bad.

In response, Israeli forces start bombing Lebanon, knocking out the Beruit airport and killing 53 civilians.

Isn't that worse? I just don't get it.

Don't mess with Israel. Lesson learned.

That was sarcasm, wasn't it?

Not really. Haven't you ever seen "The Untouchables?" Sean Connery tells Kevin Costner a valuable lesson about fighting the mafia. . .along the lines of, "they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of their's to the morgue". . .

I have quite a few trite, hippie bumper-sticker phrases running through my head in response to that quote, but I shall refrain from using any of them.

Besides, I think Connery is fundamentally wrong about human nature. In my view, things work more like this: they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of their's to the morgue. They then kill you and your entire family, then your friends kill all of them and their families. And pretty soon everybody's fighting everybody else and nobody can remember what they're fighting about. Sure, there will be a few people who want to break the cycle of violence, but they're always the first to get killed.

Then again, I have already admitted to being a misanthrope. :)

Pretty much its "The Butter Battle Book."

Dave, I heard the news on NPR and thought pretty much the same thing that you said...

(see! I'm agreeing with you!)
